It is always a good choice to create your own if you don't like petroleum products on your skin or hair.
What is Hair Grease?
So to begin our hair grease making journey, we should know what hair grease is, right? Ok, so hair grease is a solid or semi-solid hair styling product used to condition, seal in moisture. Hair grease can be applied after leave-in conditioner, scalp or applied on hair edges before doing chemical treatment such as relaxers. Hair greases have several benefits such as
soothing the dry or itchy scalp
improve hair shine
easy hairstyling such as braids or cornrows
control frizz and fly aways
lock-in hair moisture
protect the hair from been dry
conditions hair and scalp
Hair greases can have more benefits such as repair hair shafts, revitalizes hair and promoting hair growth. Though all this benefits depends solely on the hair grease formulation and whether its fortified with extracts, vitamins or plant oils that can support hair health.
Unfortunately, most of the hair greases available contain petroleum jelly and mineral oil as their primary ingredients. These ingredients are good as occlusive agents though they cause more problems than solving them.

weigh down your hair
make hair be greasy and dull

Selecting Ingredients
Beeswax or Candelilla wax: Since hair grease are especially formulated for textured hair, using beeswax can moisturize your hair as well as seal in moisture. Both waxes, beeswax or Candelilla wax contain anti-inflammatory properties that may help to soothe your dry scalp. Use candelilla wax if you want to make vegan friendly hair grease.
Moringa seed oil: This plant oil can promote hair growth and act as a good scalp treatment for dry and itchy scalp. Reduce hair frizz, smoothen hair cuticles and make your hair have shiny finish. Moringa seed oil is part of this hair grease formulation.
Hempseed oil: This is another plant oil that is good for your hair and scalp health. Hemp seed oil can prevent water fatigue in hair strands and reduce hair breakage. Adding it to your hair grease formulation for softer hair.
Grapeseed oil: This plant seed carrier oil wraps around all the previous benefits of other plant oils. It is lightweight, moisturizing and brings shine to hair. This oil won't clog pores or weigh down your hair.
Vitamin A oil: Fortifying your hair grease with vitamin A oil also known as retinyl palmitate can promote hair growth, repair damaged hair cuticles and prevent hair damage. Vitamin A can also be sourced out as retinol, you can substitute it with your retinol serum if you find it hard to get vitamin A oil.
Vitamin E oil: This ingredient is called tocopherol acetate. It can fight free radicals on hair strands. It can prevent sun damage and heat, repairing your hair shafts so adding vitamin E oil to hair grease can be a credible choice. Vitamin E oil can act as a preservative too.
Fragrance oil or essential oil: Lastly but not least find a nice scented fragrance oil that can make your hair grease more fragrant that will make your hair smell nice. Instead use essential oils such as rosemary, peppermint, lavender and carrot seed oil that can be good for your hair health.
Ingredients
1 tablespoon of beeswax/candelilla wax
1 tablespoon of moringa seed oil
1 tablespoon of hempseed oil
3 tablespoon of grapeseed oil
5 drops of Vitamin A oil (retinyl palmitate)
1 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil
5 drops of Fragrance or essential oil (optional)
Gather you ingredients and prepare tools such as kitchen thermometer, measuring scale, measuring spoons, glass measuring cup, saucepan, stove top, wooden spoon or spatula and designated jar with a lid for storing your hair grease after making it. This recipe can take less than 15 minutes to make. If you've got no vitamin A oil, use your few drops of good retinol eye serum or substitute it with carrot seed oil.
Instructions
First begin by measuring out your main ingredients; beeswax or candelilla wax, depending on what you have and other plant oils, hempseed oil, moringa seed oil and grapeseed oil.
Put your ingredients in a heat-resistant measuring cup and place it it in a saucepan with few inches of water, the saucepan with water is going to act as our water bath. Instead try using double boiler to reduce the hassle, if you have one.
Place the saucepan on the stove top and turn on the low heat. Check the temperature of ingredients in the measuring cup and observe them melt completely.
Turn off the heat. remove the melted mixture carefully and add your Vitamin A oil and Vitamin E oil then mix them together till uniform.
Add your favorite fragrance oil or essential oil blend. Do not add more than five drops of fragrance oil because they tend to have stronger scent than essential oils. In case of essential oils, individual or a blend don't exceed more than 60 drops. There are many choices that are good for hair health when considering essential oils while fragrance oil is just for the aesthetic.
Transfer your mixture to a well-sanitized jar and close with lid. Wait for it to completely cool and settle.
You can use your hair grease. It can stay for as long as 12 months if well stored.
