DIY SKINCARE
Hand salve can be a very important part of hand care routine especially during the winter months. Hand salve can help to protect your skin from the harsh elements such as freezing weather. You can also use hand salve to protect your skin from winter rash and dry cold weather which can lead to skin irritation and cracked hand skin.
In this recipe let's dive deep and learn more on how to make hand salve. Before making this recipe you have to prepare an infused oil. I'm going to used dried yarrow flowers, dried calendula flowers and dried marshmallow root, all these three herbs are powerful combination which can be to make infused oil to soothe dry, damaged and mature skin.
If you don't have infused oil in hand, then here is a quick method on how to make herbal-infused carrier oil. First, you'll need
dried yarrow flowers
dried calendula flowers
A carrier oil
STEPS
Put your dried yarrow flowers, dried calendula flowers and dried marshmallow root in the double boiler. If you don't have a double boiler don't worry, get a measuring cup then put your dried herbs in and place the measuring cup in a saucepan with water.
Now pour your carrier oil to cover the dried herb mixture by at least an inch, I'll be using olive oil in this recipe. You can use any carrier oil, just make sure that the carrier oil has a longer shelf-life to avoid your infused oil going rancid.
Gently heat your mixture which you placed in a saucepan with water from temperature 35-50 Celsius frequently stirring, so that the oil can be infused with antioxidants from the dried herbs, for 8 hours! Yeah, 8 whole hours! Just do this in your free day, gal!
Now after all those damn 8 hours, strain your oil from the spent herbs with a cheesecloth and put it in a clean sterile jar.
Store the jar in a cool and dry place, and use within six months.
After you're done with this step then you can use it to make your hand salve, If you had one already, good luck skipping this steps. Now let's dive in.
SELECTING INGREDIENTS
Herbal-infused oil: When treating hands that have been affected by harsh cold weather during the winter you can use herbal plants to infuse your carrier oil in order to harvest their benefits for optimal results. In this recipe, I have used several herbal plants and I have already written instructions on how to make infused oil in a quick way.
Dried yarrow flowers: Its botanical name is known as (Achillea millefolium). I find it to be a good option for soothing and calming the skin. It is a good choice to use for oil infusion because of its anti-inflammatory properties. But also its is good for delicate and sensitive skin types.
Dried calendula flowers: I like calendula flowers. They look like mini-sunflowers to me! Calendula botanical name is (Calendula officinalis). It has healing properties which can be good for dry and damaged skin especially winter rash during winter season.
Dried marshmallow root: This is another herb that I have used to make the herbal-infused oil. Its botanical name is called (Althaea officinalis). It is good for calming dry and mature skin.
A carrier oil: You can use any carrier oil of your choice, though I prefer to use olive oil since it is good for all skin types. For me it is a good idea to use all- inclusive ingredients so that anyone can get to use this recipe.
Beeswax: I used beeswax in this recipe. But if you are a vegan and please substitute beeswax for soy wax or candelilla wax. As I said before, this recipe is all-inclusive. Just grate the wax of your choice to small flakes. It is good if your soy wax is already in flakes. The wax is main excipient in this recipe. It is nourishing and moisturizing packed with triglycerides.
Vitamin E oil: It is an oxidant. It can be used to fight off free radicals on the skin that are caused by harsh elements. But also Vitamin E oil can be used as a preservative in this hand salve. This hand salve should be used in less than 6 months. I think this hand salve is good for winter season. It would be finished before spring time.
German chamomile essential oil: It can be very soothing for a dry and inflamed skin, that's why I included it in this recipe. I like this combination of lavender and German chamomile essential oil.
Lavender essential oil: Ah! I luv the sweet-smelling scent of lavender! It has anti-bacterial, aromatic and anti-inflammatory properties.
Carrot seed oil: This oil can tone the skin. It can be a little bit expensive. Blending it with the already mentioned essential oils, lavender and German chamomile. Use it for optimal results in your hand salve.
