We all love our fluffy friends. Whether its cats, dogs or another furry friends, they need to not be fed with nutritious food at the right time but also washing and cleaning up after them is important for both our health and safety. Everyone enjoy patting a well-groomed clean pet.

DIY Dog Shampoo🐶

This formulation is tailored to address dogs though even cats can benefits from the shampoo. This DIY shampoo is very gentle to the coat and skin underneath and can be soothing to both sensitive and irritated skin of your furry friend. It is made with mild surfactants that leave no residue, non-toxic and contains no harmful ingredients that could negatively affect your pet.

There are many ways as to how this shampoo can help your pet especially during regular grooming routine

Selecting Ingredients

  • Distilled water: Whenever you're making water-based formulations, it is a must to use distilled water because if you use other kinds of water there are chances of getting into contact with bacteria and impurities that can affect the final product. Bacterial growth in the dog shampoo can reduce efficacy and shelf life of the product.

  • Coco betaine: Also known as cocamidopropyl betaine, this ingredient is derived from coconut oil and act as a mild surfactant. It can be a good cleanser with rich lather. But also is a good conditioning agent for your dog's coat. It is quite gentle surfactant that won't cause irritaion to your dog's skin and leaves no residue after thoroughly cleansing and rinsing.

  • Disodium laureth sulfosuccinate: This is also another surfactant that is not harsh as other sodium lauryl sulfates (SLS). It is a foaming agent, texturizing and emulsifier for other ingredients in shampoo formulation. Another good thing about this ingredient is that it doesn't strip away natural oils off your dog's coat.

  • PEG-7 glyceryl monococoate: It is known as PEG-7 glyceryl cocoate. It is a good emulsifier and an excellent emollient. This ingredient can help to bind water-based and oil-based ingredients altogether but as an emollient it can soften the dog's coat. So, it is going to be very beneficial to your dog shampoo formulation.

  • Hydrolyzed silk protein: This broken silk micro protein can repair damaged furry coat and revitalize your dog's coat. Adding it to shampoo formulation can be important for your dog's furry coat.

  • Guar gum: This ingredient is simply a thickening agent for your shampoo formulation. It emulsifies other ingredients. It is usually added in water-based ingredients, so it is definitely needed.

  • Phenoxyethanol SA: It is simply acts as a preservative for your dog shampoo. It prevents bacterial growth in the final product. Another good thing about this preservative is that it doesn't leave residues or cause harm to your dog's coat.

Ingredients

  • 9⅓ tablespoons of distilled water

  • 5 tablespoons of coco betaine

  • 4 tablespoons of disodium laureth sulfosuccinate

  • 1½ teaspoon of PEG-7 glyceryl monococoate

  • 1½ teaspoon of hydrolyzed silk protein

  • 1 teaspoon of guar gum

  • 1 teaspoon of PEG-150 distearate

  • ½ teaspoon of phenoxyethanol SA

    *All metrics are US based.

But also prepare utensils and tools that you are going to make this shampoo formulation. Gather measuring spoons, heat-resistant beakers, stove, saucepan, hand-held mixer, spatula and designated well-sanitized bottle. If you find it difficult to get these ingredients in local stores then turn to online options to get these ingredients easily.

Instructions

  1. Measure out your ingredients: distilled water, coco betaine, disodium laureth sulfosuccinate, PEG-7 glyceryl monococoate, hydrolyzed silk protein, guar gum, PEG-150 distearate and phenoxyethanol SA and set them aside.

  2. Add coco betaine, disodium laureth sulfosuccinate and PEG-150 distearate in a clean heat-resistant beaker and heat the mixture. You can also make a water bath from a saucepan with few inches of water, then place your beaker in it.

  3. Place the saucepan with a beaker on a stove top and heat the mixture to 150 to 160 Fahrenheit, check your temperature using a kitchen thermometer, stir occasionally. This with melt the PEG-150 distearate.

  4. Cool the mixture to 100 Fahrenheit after removing it from the stove top.

  5. Meanwhile, take another heat-resistant beaker and add your distilled water, PEG-7 glyceryl monococoate and sprinkle guar gum and mix with a hand-held mixer, make sure you don't get lumps in the mixture.

  6. Combine mixtures from both beakers in a mixing bowl and use hand-held mixer to form homogenous mixture.

  7. Then add your hydrolyzed silk protein and phenoxyethanol and continue stirring till you get uniform mixture.

  8. Pour your mixture in a well-sanitized pump bottle and close with a lid.

  9. Ready for cleaning your dog. Enjoy grooming routine!
