  • Baking soda: Also known as sodium bicarbonate, this substance can act as a neutralizing agent when mixed together with vinegar which is acidic in nature. Baking soda can also help to remove stains and soften fabric.

  • Sea salt: This is another good substance that can be used to make DIY fabric softeners. Find coarse-grained sea salt so that you can easily create dry blend recipes with them. Using it with baking soda can improve the texture of the fabric to be more softer.

  • Epsom salt: This is another popular option that can be easily outsourced at home. Again use coarse-grained salt so that it takes time to dissolve in laundry load during running those rinse cycle to ensure clothes become cleaner and softer.

DIY Fabric Softeners Formulations

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of baking soda

  • 2 cups of warm water

  • 30 to 40 drops of your favorite essential oils or essential oil blend

Directions: Take a heatproof mixing bowl and add warm water and baking soda then stir well till all the baking soda is dissolved. Add white vinegar to the mix and continue to stir to get a liquid mixture. Lastly add your essential oils and mix again. Transfer the liquid into the bottle and store in a refrigerator.

Use: Simply pour your fabric softener in the washing machine drawer during the rinse cycle. Your clothes will come out more cleaner, softer and well scented.

Hair Conditioner Fabric Softener

Ingredients

  • ⅓ cup of distilled white vinegar

  • ⅔ cup of warm water

  • ½ cup of mild hair conditioner

Find a mild, regular hair conditioner, that is well-scented and has just basic surfactants to do the work. Stay away from specialized protein-based or moisturizing conditioners, they can lead to staining your clothes. A simple rinse-out hair conditioner will do the job.

Directions: Combine all these liquid ingredients together till they form a homogenous mixture. Transfer the liquid to a well-sanitized bottle.

Use: Add the hair conditioner fabric softener to the rinse cycle and rinse your laundry as usual.

Sea Salt Fabric Softener

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of Sea salt

  • ¼ cup of baking soda

  • 25 drops of your favorite essential oils

Directions: Add your dry ingredients to a mixing bowl and mix with a wooden spoon. Then add your essential oils and mix again. Put your mixture in a Mason jar and close with a tight lid to avoid air exposure to your fabric softener.

Use: Add your sea salt fabric softener right before the rinse cycle in a washing machine. Return the drawer and run the rinse cycle as usual.

White Vinegar and Salt Fabric Softener

Ingredients

  • ½ cup of Epsom salt

  • ½ cup of baking soda

  • 1 cup of distilled white vinegar

  • 2 cups of warm water

  • 20 to 30 drops of essential oil or essential oil blends

Directions: Start by adding dry ingredients to a heat-resistant mixing bowl. Next start adding water first then mix well followed by pouring distilled white vinegar and stir well till all the dry ingredients are completely dissolved. Then pour this liquid mixture to a clean, well-sanitized bottle.

Use: Again, add your fabric softener before the rinse cycle and simply rinse out your clothes in a rinse cycle as usual.

Dry Fabric Softener

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of Epsom salt

  • ¼ cup of baking soda

  • 1 tablespoon of borax

  • 20 drops of your favorite essential oil or essential oil blends

Directions: Just combine all dry ingredients altogether in a mixing bowl. Add your essential oils and blend with a spatula. Scoop your blend and transfer it to a glass Mason jar. Close with a lid tightly.

Use: Simply add your softener salts before the rinse cycle and then run the rinse cycle as usual. Dry your clothes.
