DIY SKINCARE
Hello, today is another beautiful day, I already did perfume oils I thought it might be a good idea to turn them in to solid perfume balms. They are easy to make and a good option to carry while travelling. The scent stays longer on your skin than regular perfume sprays. First of all to make a good solid perfume balm is better to educate ourselves on perfume notes.
In perfume pyramid, they are divided into three tiers. Top notes, middle notes and base notes. What we mean by notes is actually an individual scent, absolutes, essential oils or fragrance oils based on their rate of evaporation after applying them on your skin.
In this recipe we gonna simply use essential oils, some of them you might be having from other recipes you made in the past, if you don't have you can buy them online, just look for the certified organic ones, those are most preferred for this recipe.
Top notes: These are simply fragrances, scent, absolutes, extracts or essential oils that have high evaporation rate and make between 5 to 20% of the perfume. This is the first thing your nose sense when hit by perfume scent. It is usually short-lived and dissipate within 5 to 20 minutes. Popular notes include bergamot, pink grapefruit, yuzu, palmarosa or geranium rose.
Middle notes: They are also called heart motes. They make a large percent of the perfume blend from 60 to 80%. These notes close the gap between top notes and base notes. Good middle notes is what make a nice-scented solid perfume balm. These notes can last up to 60 minutes. Some of middle notes you'll probably consider in your solid perfume balm are pink lotus absolute, marjoram, Cypress leaf, sweet fennel and beeswax absolute.
Base notes: They make 5 to 20% of the perfume blend. These are usually very viscous and thicker absolutes, many sellers and companies alike usually dilute them before selling them. Some have a scent so strong you can get a mild headache. I think diluted ones are a better option for small batches made at home. But also they are more affordable than the pure absolutes from the sources. Some of the base notes are amber oil, frankincense and sandalwood.
In the art of perfume blending, there is no a right and wrong scent, with trial and error and practice you can create scent that you'll come to appreciate and love. Use your natural talents to smell various scents till you recognize the ones that are best for you. You can use a fragrance wheel to find what complements you.
SELECTING INGREDIENTS
Fractionated coconut oil: It is also called coconut MCT oil. It is a good perfume diluent because of its neutral odor and stability more than the unrefined coconut oil with stronger aroma and less prone to go rancid as your perfume blend matures overtime.
Vegetable Glycerin: In this recipe, we are going to use glycerin to preserve the scent of the solid perfume balm. Glycerin is a good moisturizing agent. It feels soft on your skin when used on the perfume balm. In order to preserve our perfume balm's signature scent for a long time, it is good to add glycerin to our recipe.
Patchouli essential oil: This essential oil is good choice for middle note. The musky, earthy aroma of patchouli can be a good choice for masking the body odor. Even after few hours still its scent lingers, a good choice for our perfume oil.
Carrot seed essential oil: This makes the top note. This is also a good choice for this recipe because of its tonic and antiseptic properties. It can cause a photo sensitivity and may not be pregnant safe.
Vetiver essential oil: I like vetiver scent so much! This makes for good middle and base note. It has an earthy dry grass scent. It is like lemongrass but more earthy notes and woody notes good for this recipe. It can also act as a stimulant and anti-oxidant.
Cocoa absolute: You have to know that an absolute means that the concentrated form of a plant extract, usually stronger that its oils or hydrosol end products after expeller pressing and processing. Cocoa absolute therefore is very concentrated form of its cocoa butter. It has a very sweet scent of fine dark chocolate that you'll love. This is the ultimate base note here.
Jojoba oil: It is has a bland odor making it a good option to use when blending essential oils. A perfume blend should not be more than 10% in your chosen carrier. in this matter, its fractionated coconut oil we are using.
Beeswax: Beeswax is what makes the balm. Grate your beeswax for easy use. If you're a vegan don't worry, we got you covered! Just replace beeswax for candelilla wax or soy wax flakes in your recipe. Candelilla wax is also praised for reducing signs of aging and stretch marks.
