With improvements of technology in manufacturing skincare products in recent years and better skincare formulations, efficacy of skincare products has become better. From using PDRN to peptides to fullerenes skincare industry always deliver! Now let's jump to our topic today and is.. Liposomal Vitamin C Serum Recipe.

Liposomal Vitamin C

Before we continue, let's address liposomes, the crucial component in creating liposomal vitamin C. In simple terms, liposomes are spherical vesicles composed of one or multiple bilayer lipids. Liposomes resemble the cell membrane layer by far. Liposomes can be empty or can encapsulate various nutrients such as vitamins or peptides which are to be delivered to the body. In fact liposomes act as a vehicle for delivering water-soluble vitamin C to highly hydrophobic skin barrier.

They come in many sizes ranging from 50 to 500 nm (nanometers) whereby the range of 100 to 200nm is considered to be efficient in drug delivery but also for easier absorption rate on the skin barrier. After various studies in liposomes it has been observed that liposomal vitamin C is more bioavailable and regular vitamin C.

Why Liposomal Vitamin C Serum?

Different from regular vitamin C face serum, liposomal vitamin C face serum has more benefits that your skin can improve from such as

  • Slow and consistent delivery of vitamin C even after hours of application

  • Bioavailability: since liposomal vitamin C particles share common similarities to cell membranes and can be easily encapsulated by cells.

  • Higher absorption rate than regular vitamin C serum

  • Stability: liposomal vitamin C does not denature easily like other forms of vitamin C in a serum formulation.

  • Boost collagen production faster than regular vitamin C serum

This liposomal vitamin C serum can also help to reduce acne scars, dark spots, age spots, hyperpigmentation, brighten dull skin and increase skin radiance.

Before you make your own liposomal vitamin C serum you have to make liposomal vitamin C on its own. You'll begin making a small batch of liposomal vitamin C then include it in the serum base.

Selecting Ingredients

  • Vitamin C powder: This is your main active ingredient in this cosmetic formulation. Vitamin C powder is a water-soluble essential vitamin that can help with skin barrier. Vitamin C can help to boost skin collagen production thus making the skin more plumper and supple. This potent anti-oxidant can help with skin elasticity. When encapsulated it can be even more powerful. It is also known as ascorbic acid.

  • Lecithin powder: It is the ingredient that is used to make the liposomes that are going to enclose and act as a carrier to your vitamin C nutrient. Liposomes act as good delivery vehicles for nutrients and drugs to the body cells since they have similarities with phospholipids bilayer of the cellular membrane. But also lecithin is a good source of choline which can support cellular health. When finding lecithin powder look for soy or sunflower derived one which is a non-GMO (Genetically Modified Organism).

  • Distilled water: When making this kind of recipe then sanitation and purity should be your first priority. In order to not have impurities and chances of bacterial growth in the end product then using distilled water is vital. Avoid using tap water since it can contain mineral traces and worse enough dangerous microbiomes. Also don't get into temptation of using bottled drinking water since it has traces of minerals too. You're going to use it in making liposomal vitamin C first then in serum formulation.

  • Vodka 40% alcohol: You can get it online or in the liquor section of a big store. The Vodka is going to act like some kind of catalyst to facilitate the formation of liposomes during blending lecithin and vitamin C powder.

  • Sodium gluconate: It is a good chelating agent and stabilizer to be included in your face serum formulation. It keeps formula more stable, adjust formulation pH but also it can help the skin to be hydrated, thanks to its humectant properties.

  • Caprylyl glycol: In this formulation, this ingredient is going to act as a preservative agent which can lengthen shelf life of your face serum. It has other properties such as moisturizing and hydrating properties to the skin. You can find it trademarked in various names but also consider using propylene glycol as an alternative to this cosmetic ingredient.

  • Pomegranate seed oil: It is a lightweight, non-comedogenic carrier oil that can be beneficial to the skin face. It is such a good emollient to be included in face serum formulation. It won't clog your pores or exacerbate acne breakouts.

  • Sodium acrylate: In this formulation, we use both oil-based and water-based ingredients so to bind and stabilize these ingredients to avoid separation and increase the shelf life of the face serum formulation.

  • Liposomal vitamin C: At this point in time you'd have made this liposomal vitamin C, there are ingredients and steps below to make liposomal vitamin C. This is your main active ingredient that can help your skin to be brighten and plump.

  • Vitamin E oil: Also known as tocopherol sometimes found as tocopherol acetate, vitamin E and liposomal vitamin C can work synergistically to support skin health and boost skin collagen production.

  • Essential oils: You can use favorite essential oil that can help the serum formulation smell nice and have more numerous benefits consider using sweet orange, lavender, grapefruit or lemon essential oils. Essential oils should not be more than one percent of this face serum formulation.
