Benefits of Having a Beard

Having a well-groomed and cared for beard can have several benefits and a good reason for growing and keeping yours. Some of the things that you can get out of keeping a beard are

  • Improve your looks: Having a well-kept beard can make your jaw appear more masculine and make you more attractive. Beard can improve your aesthetic and fashion sense since it has become trendy to wear a beard.

  • Protection against harsh elements in the environment: Beard can act as a cover against harsh weather elements such as the wind. Underneath your chin can be safe from cold and wind especially if you live in cold areas.

  • A symbol of a particular group: Beard can be a symbol to represent men in certain communities or religious groups, age and rank. This can help group members identify them in the hierarchy.

  • Reduce chances of skin damage: Having a beard can make your skin protected from chin acne or cyst and more important from UV sun rays damage. The skin also will be safe from using shavers every day that may cause micro cuts that can lead to bacterial infections.

Selecting Ingredients

  • Coconut oil: It is a good carrier oil when it comes to haircare and it can be incorporated in beard balm. Coconut oil can help your beard to grow and moisturize the skin underneath too due to triglycerides the coconut oil have that have numerous benefits.

  • Avocado oil: It is plant oil derived from avocado. It has avocado-like aroma filled with essential fatty acids that can support beard growth. Avocado oil is such a nice emollient that it can be used to moisturize and tame frizz in beard. Having it as part of the beard balm formulation is a great ingredient.

  • Mango butter: Natural butters can be beneficial for beard growth too. In this formulation we've chosen to use it since it contains vitamin A, C and E as well as fatty acids that can nourish, soften your beard and support your skin health underneath that beard. Mango butter has a nice aroma that can be useful for a beard balm.

  • Jojoba oil: This oil has the similar characteristics as sebum, natural oil produced by the skin. Adding jojoba oil into the beard balm can boost its potential to support beard growth while being beneficial to overall skin health.

  • Beeswax: Its great ingredient that is going to act as your base for the beard balm. It is going to help thicken the other oils into a solid balm. Apart from that, beeswax can be a good sealant to all the good oils from the balm. It can also smoothen and straighten beard strands and make them less prone to being tangled or forming knots.

  • Essential oils: Here you can skip this part, or choose a wide range of essential oils for different purposes. If you want for beard growth then consider using rosemary, peppermint, eucalyptus or lavender essential oils. If you prefer aesthetic over function then going for citrus scents such as tangerine essential oil will work best!

  • Vitamin E oil: Vitamin E oil has anti-oxidant properties that help to quench free radical that your beard will be exposed to during the day, whether its smog from air pollution or UV sun rays exposure vitamin E oil is good at dealing with oxidative stress. It is also a good preservative for your beard balm formulation.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons of Coconut oil

  • 1½ tablespoon of Avocado oil

  • 1 tablespoon of Mango butter

  • 2 teaspoons of Jojoba oil

  • 2 heaping teaspoons of Beeswax

  • 15-20 drops of Essential oils(optional)

  • 20 drops of Vitamin E oil

Once you manage to get all your ingredients, then its time to gather your tools for making the beard balm. Collect measuring spoons, heat-resistant measuring cups, wooden spoon, saucepan or double boiler, kitchen thermometer and designated jar where you're going to store your beard balm. Ensure your tools are clean and well-sanitized. Now let's create this very simple beard balm recipe.

Instructions

  1. Start making your beard balm by measuring out ingredients: coconut oil, avocado oil, mango butter, jojoba oil and beeswax.

  2. Add them in a double boiler, place it in the stove top and set it on low heat. Instead if you've got no double boiler then don't worry. We've got you covered. Just get a saucepan then add few inches of water then place a heat-resistant measuring cup with ingredients in it, this will act as your water bath, then place the saucepan on the stove top and set on low heat.

  3. Heat the mixture till beeswax and mango butter have completely melted and dissolved with other oils. Stir with wooden spoon occasionally to achieve a homogenous mixture. Check the temperature to not be more than 170 Fahrenheit.

  4. Remove the double boiler or from heat and turn off the stove. Allow it to cool to 140 Fahrenheit.

  5. Add your Vitamin E oil and favorite essential oil to your mixture then stir till uniformly mixed.

  6. Pour into the well-sanitized jars and close tightly with a lid.

  7. Store your beard balm in a cool and dry place.

How to Take Care of Your Beard

  • Create a routine of washing your beard for two to three times a week to have clean looking beard.

  • Commit to regular brushing after washing your beard to remove and dirt but also straightening it to show its length.

  • Use a beard balm: It will moisturize and promote beard growth, beard balm can up your beard maintenance.

  • As part of your beard care, trim beard regularly yourself or as part hairstyling routine when you go to the barber's shop. Address the neck line for cleaner look. Ensure trimming tools used are well-sterilized to avoid acne breakouts or infections.

  • Remember to take care of the skin underneath. Having a beard should not stop you from doing a regular skincare routine for better skin health.
