When we think about cleaning the bathroom, we usually use strong disinfectants to this cleaning routine everyday or every other day. It can be understood as to why we might try our best to get this part of the house so sparkling clean since it can be infested with dangerous bacteria that can cause illness if not well cleaned.

Why Use Homemade Bathroom Cleaners?

If you've following closely then you've come to know that there are alternatives to these harsh household cleaning products. They get surfaces clean though let's face it, these products come with their side effects such as

  • Contains carcinogenic ingredients: With or without our knowledge, every day we expose ourselves to dangerous ingredients found in household cleaning products such as volatile organic compounds(VOCs), formaldehyde and others of such nature. Even after washing with water still their particles remain on the surfaces and air.

  • Creates superbugs: Most of the household cleaning products and antiseptics overtime can turn mild harmless bacteria into resistant ones due to prolonged exposure to the chemicals, this can make cleaning and killing those bacteria much harder overtime and requiring more dangerous ingredients that can be then harmful to your health overall.

  • Allergic reactions: Because many household products are harsh, they can cause both mild and severe reactions to skin, cause eyes to burn or feeling chest pain and congestion when inhaled directly.

  • Discoloration to the sinks: Some household cleaning products that if left on the surfaces of toilet sinks, drain, wash basin and tiles they can discolor and corrode beautifully colored marbles and tiles leaving permanent stains that cannot be removed unless you change tiles which can be expensive.

What if I let you know that there actually simple solution that you can make at home in order to clean your bathroom with no harsh chemicals that can harm you. With simple ingredients that you can find at home then here are great sustainable and eco-friendly solution for you.

Selecting Ingredients

  • Baking soda: Another name for this ingredient is sodium bicarbonate. It is among the top household ingredients that can help you clean surfaces efficiently. It can react with stains and sloughs them which can be easily scrubbed and flushed with hot water.

  • White vinegar: Used in salads and other culinary delights, white vinegar contains large percent of acetic acid which be useful in cleaning surfaces. Due to its acidic nature, it can also be a good disinfectant. But also when used with baking soda it remove stubborn surfaces.

  • Borax: Its chemical name is sodium borate. It is widely used as part of cleaning in many households. Including it in your DIY recipe making can be a great idea since it can clean surfaces and leave them sparkling. If you use them with combination of baking soda, washing soda and/or white vinegar then you'll have cleaning powerhouse!

  • Washing soda: It should not be confused with baking soda. They are similar in some ways but not the same. It is called sodium carbonate. It can be used to clean surfaces too. Adding it to your recipe even substituting it in place of baking soda won't ruin the recipes shared below.

  • Coca-Cola drink: Yes! The drink you know, even drink it every day! It contains phosphoric acid that can help remove very stubborn stains even limescales. If an iron nail is left for a long time in the C0ca-Cola drink it may corrode, that how powerful this drink is!

  • Others: Using hot water or mild dish soap, lemon juice or laundry powder soap may really help a lot too in cleaning. All these ingredients are safer and not too harsh that they may cause health hazards.

DIY Bathroom Cleaner Recipes

At home you can make these simple recipes to help you with toilet and bathroom cleaning as well as other dirty and stained surfaces.

Simple Bathroom Tile Cleaner

Ingredients

  • 1½ cup of baking soda

  • ½ cup of white vinegar

  • ½ cup of warm water

Steps

  1. Combine all the ingredients together in a mixing bowl and pour the mixture in bottle.

  2. Shake well before each use.

Use: Shake well then pour the liquid on tiles or wash basin. Leave it for like five minutes and scrub the surface with bristle brush to remove dirt. Wash the surface with plenty of clean water.

Toilet Sink Cleaner

Ingredients

  • ½ cup of baking soda

  • ½ cup of borax

  • ½ cup of white vinegar

Steps

  1. Combine baking soda, borax and white vinegar into a thick paste.

Use: By using a bush apply the mixture on the sink and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes before you scrub the toilet sink.

Coco-Cola Bathroom Cleaner

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of washing soda

  • 1 cup of borax

  • 1 bottle of Coca-Cola drink (1000ml)

Steps

  1. First of all mix dry ingredients, washing soda and borax in a bowl.

  2. Add Coca-Cola drink and mix to get the mixture. The reason for using Coca-Cola drink is because it contains phosphoric acid that can help to remove dirt and stains. Use the red Original Coca-Cola not Diet Coke because its not very strong.

Use: Pour your mixture on stained or dirt surface in the bathroom. Scrub the surfaces after 5 to 10 minutes and then flush with hot water.

Drain Cleaner

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of baking soda

  • 1 cup of white vinegar

Use: Sprinkle baking soda in the drain and around the drain. Then pour white vinegar, let it fizz for five minutes then scrub the surface with brush. Pour hot boiling water down the drain.

Bathroom Cleaner Dry Blend

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of baking soda

  • ½ cup of borax

  • ½ cup of Sea salt

Steps

  1. Simply combine all these dry ingredients in a mixing bowl.

  2. Transfer the mixture into a clean dry container and close with tight lid that won't allow air in.

Use: Whenever you want to use the dry blend, just sprinkle on the stained or dirt surface pour a little bit of white vinegar and let it fizz for like 5 minutes before you scrub and wash away with water
