This is where hand sanitizer come to place. If you want to protect your hands from dangerous microbes. Applying hand sanitizer regularly can elevate your hand care game while preventing germs from breeding and causing diseases.

What You Should Know About Hand Sanitizer Gel

There are many hand sanitizers out there but alcohol based sanitizers are best at killing 99% of the germs and bacteria though hand sanitizers won't cleanse your hands of

  • Hand sanitizers can't kill all kinds of microbes: Some types of germs or bacteria like Clostridium difficile can not be killed by hand sanitizer gel alone. Some bacteria that have antibiotic resistance also can be very hard to eliminate with hand sanitizer gel alone and may require other types of antiseptics.

  • Your hands should be clean: Before applying your hand sanitizer gel then you should wash and pat dry your hands first. You should not use hand sanitizer on dirty hands since your hands won't be sanitized properly.

  • Hand sanitizer gel cannot get rid of harmful chemicals: If your hands gets contaminated with things like insecticides, fungicides, heavy metals or other kind of dangerous chemicals cause they lack chelating agents to remove such chemicals.

  • Accidentally consuming hand sanitizer gel may cause alcohol poisoning. It is because many sanitizers are largely composed with alcohol. Keep away from kids for safety measures.

DIY Hand Sanitizer Gel

After knowing something about hand sanitizer gel then making one to protect your hands can be a side project to consider. With a little bit of time and effort you can make simple DIY hand sanitizer gel at home.

Selecting Ingredients

  • Alcohol 70%: There are different types of alcohol but for a hand sanitizer gel then ethanol alcohol is a good choice. Ethanol is made from fermenting plants like sugarcane. Alcohol can kill more than 99% of bacteria that are found on your hands. For any hand sanitizer to be effective then using 60 to 70% alcohol base is going to be effective.

  • Distilled water: To make antiseptic formulations like hand sanitizer gel, then you can not use tap water or bottled drinking water since these options are more likely to be contaminated with bacteria and mineral impurities.

  • Vegetable glycerin: In order to have a bit hydrating and moisturizing properties in your hand sanitizer gel then adding glycerin is a good idea. Adding glycerin can reduce drying effect of alcohol in the formulation.

  • Aloe vera gel: Another ingredient that is also moisturizing and has anti-inflammatory properties that can help your skin to not get too dry with the alcohol.

  • Copolymer: This is the thickening agent that is going to make this hand sanitizer gel-like.

  • Fragrance oil: This ingredient is optional to use in your hand sanitizer formulation though including it can make your hand sanitizer gel deodorizing, leaving your hands smelling gret upon using it.

Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons of alcohol 70% (ethanol)

  • 2 teaspoons of distilled water

  • ½ teaspoon of vegetable glycerin

  • 1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel

  • ¼ teaspoon of copolymer

  • 10 to 15 drops of fragrance

You can easily find all these ingredients at a local store or online at a very affordable price. Then gather your tools like measuring spoons, heatproof measuring cup, spatula and disinfected clean hand sanitizer gel. Now let's begin!

Instructions

  1. First, measure out all your ingredients except for fragrance oil and set them aside.

  2. Pour aloe vera gel and glycerin and mix them together. Add your copolymer to the mixture and mix again till copolymer is part of the blend.

  3. Add distilled water and 3 tablespoons of alcohol and continue mixing till the mixture is homogenous and gel-like.

  4. Take other 3 tablespoons of alcohol and mix them with drops of your favorite fragrance oil in another measuring cup.

  5. Now combine these two blends till well mixed. The pH of the mixture is going to be around 5.

  6. Transfer the gel-like mixture into the disinfected bottle and close with a lid.

  7. Your hand sanitizer gel is ready for use!
